
The Need for Speed: Your Guide to Choosing the Right SSD

If you are still booting your operating system from a traditional Hard Disk Drive (HDD), you are missing out on one of the most noticeable performance upgrades available. Solid-State Drives (SSDs) are many times faster than the hard drives we are exposed to every day.
With an SSD, your computer will boot in seconds, and applications will open almost instantly. But once you decide to make the upgrade, you are faced with a new challenge: choosing the right type. There are three main types of SSDs on the market today: SATA, M.2, and PCIe (Add-in Card).
Here is a breakdown of what they are and which one is right for you.
1. The 2.5" SATA SSD: The Perfect Entry Point
The SATA SSD is the most common form factor. At 2.5 inches, it is the exact same size and shape as a typical laptop hard drive.
Speed: Up to 600 MB/s.
The Verdict: Of all the SSD options, SATA is the least expensive and the most popular choice for SSD beginners.
Even though it is the "slowest" of the SSD family, do not underestimate it. A standard SATA SSD is still four to five times faster than a traditional spinning hard drive. If you are transitioning from an older HDD to your very first SSD, a 2.5" SATA drive should be your first consideration because it is budget-friendly and compatible with almost any modern motherboard.
2. The M.2 SSD: Sleek and Modern
M.2 drives look very different from standard drives—they look a lot like a stick of computer RAM. Instead of using cables, they plug directly into a dedicated M.2 slot flat on your motherboard (note that M.2 slots aren't on every older motherboard; they started becoming standard around the Intel 6th Gen "Skylake" era).
When shopping for an M.2 drive, you have to pay attention, because they are divided into two different protocols that look identical but perform very differently:
M.2 SATA vs. M.2 NVMe
The installation procedure for both is exactly the same—you just plug them into the M.2 slot. Because the physical design is the same, the main difference lies entirely in the speed:
M.2 SATA: Caps out at a maximum speed of 600 MB/s (the exact same speed as a standard 2.5" SATA SSD).
M.2 NVMe: Utilizes a faster data pathway, reaching speeds anywhere from 2,100 MB/s to 3,500 MB/s depending on the manufacturer.
The Verdict: That is at least a three-fold difference in speed! Unsurprisingly, the NVMe option is more expensive. If your motherboard has an M.2 slot that supports NVMe, it is highly recommended to spend the extra money on an M.2 NVMe drive. Buying an M.2 SATA drive doesn't offer any speed advantage over a cheaper 2.5" drive.
3. The PCIe SSD (Add-in Card): The Ultimate Powerhouse
PCIe SSDs are the best—and most expensive—consumer drives available. Instead of a small stick or a 2.5" block, these look like a small graphics card and mount directly into the PCIe slots on your motherboard.
The Verdict: The price tag is a significant jump compared to both SATA and M.2 options, so they are not often used by casual builders. However, if money is no object and you want top-tier, uncompromised speed right in front of your eyes, a PCIe SSD is the way to go.
