How the Moon Affects the Oceans

Tides are the periodic rise and fall of sea levels caused primarily by the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and, to a lesser extent, the Sun. The Moon's gravity pulls on the Earth, creating a bulge in the ocean on the side facing the Moon. Simultaneously, on the opposite side of the Earth, another bulge occurs due to the centrifugal force generated by Earth's rotation. These bulges represent the high tides, while the areas in between experience low tides.

The Earth completes one rotation approximately every 24 hours, causing most coastal areas to experience two high tides and two low tides each day. The strength of these tides varies depending on the Moon's position relative to the Earth and Sun.

Types of Tides

Tides are not uniform and can be categorized into different types.

Spring Tides

Spring tides occur during the full moon and new moon phases when the Earth, Moon, and Sun align in a straight line. This alignment causes the gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun to combine, producing higher-than-average high tides and lower-than-average low tides. These are called “spring tides,” not because of the season, but from the idea of “springing forth.”

Neap Tides

Neap tides happen during the first and third quarters of the Moon when the Sun and Moon are at right angles relative to the Earth. In this configuration, the gravitational pull of the Sun partially cancels out the Moon’s influence, leading to lower high tides and higher low tides than average. Neap tides are milder but still significant in shaping coastal ecosystems.

The Moon’s Distance Matters

The distance between the Moon and Earth also affects tidal intensity. The Moon’s orbit is elliptical, meaning it sometimes is closer to Earth (perigee) and sometimes farther away (apogee). When the Moon is at perigee, its gravitational pull is stronger, resulting in higher high tides, known as perigean spring tides. Conversely, when the Moon is at apogee, the high tides are slightly lower.
