Long before she stood on the international stage, Thaw Nanda Aung—known to the world as Han Lay—was a girl from the countryside with a point to prove. Raised by a single mother who struggled to make ends meet, she excelled academically, ultimately earning a psychology degree from the historic Rangoon University.

Han Lay did not just want to be recognized for her physical beauty; she wanted to be a role model celebrated for her intelligence and resilience. Despite critics who told her she didn't fit the traditional mold of a pageant queen, she worked relentlessly, saving money to improve her photoshoots while living in a rented apartment with her mother. Her unshakeable confidence and agility of mind paid off when she claimed the title of Miss Grand Myanmar 2020.

Competing Amidst a Coup

Her ultimate test came just weeks before she was set to leave for the Miss Grand International pageant in Bangkok. On February 1, a devastating military coup struck Myanmar.

Instead of solely focusing on her pageant preparations, Han Lay took to the streets to protest the dictatorship. When she finally boarded her flight with a tiny escort team, she carried the heavy burden of her nation’s grief. While her competitors focused on the crown, she spent her nights crying with her roommate, terrified for her people as the military cut off mobile data and violence escalated at home.

A Tearful Plea to the World

March 27 marked one of the darkest days in Myanmar's recent history, with over 100 heroes losing their lives. That same night, Han Lay had to force a smile and step onto the pageant stage. Despite her heartbreak, she delivered a stunning preliminary performance that broke a six-year unplaced streak for Myanmar, earning a spot in the Top 20.

Though she did not advance to the Top 10, the pageant's climax belonged entirely to her. In a surprise moment, the young woman in the white dress was given the microphone. With tears welling in her eyes, she bravely defied the military regime on a global broadcast, pleading with the international community to help her country and end the violence.

When asked if she was afraid of being unable to return home after speaking out, Han Lay stated that her only true fear was her country losing its fight for democracy.
